What began as a bold experiment in franchise cricket in 2008 has grown into one of the most powerful sports businesses on the planet.

The IPL ecosystem is now valued at around $18 billion as of FY25, placing it among the world’s leading sporting leagues, and remarkably, a tournament spanning just two months generates economic value nearly comparable to India’s entire sports industry, estimated at around $19 billion.

According to a recent Kotak Mutual Fund report, the league contributes between $182 million and $6.7 billion annually to the Indian economy through media, advertising, sponsorships, and ancillary sectors.

At the heart of this growth is a media rights boom. Broadcasting rights have skyrocketed from $918 million in 2008 to $6.2 billion for the 2023–2027 cycle, a compounded growth rate that outpaces several global leagues. The IPL now commands a viewership of nearly one billion across television and digital platforms, with advertising revenues alone expected to touch $600 million in 2025.

The financial model is equally distinctive. Franchises derive over 70% of revenues from centrally shared media rights and sponsorship pools, ensuring predictable cash flows that make teams resemble infrastructure-like assets rather than conventional sports clubs.

Franchise valuations have followed suit. The sale of Rajasthan Royals for $1.63 billion and Royal Challengers Bengaluru changing hands in a deal worth $1.78 billion pushed the league past $16 billion in total valuation, with the figure continuing to climb.

The IPL is no longer just a cricket tournament but a technology-led media ecosystem with wide-ranging economic impact and spillover benefits across industries. With the next TV rights auction on the horizon, many believe it is only a matter of time before the IPL overtakes the NFL as the world’s most valuable sporting league.
