India won their first and only Thomas Cup title in 2022, defeating 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in the final at Bangkok, Thailand. This historic triumph made India the sixth nation ever to win badminton’s most prestigious men’s team championship.

Before this golden moment, India had reached the semifinals three times in 1952, 1955, and 1979. The 2022 victory ended a 43-year wait to return to the final four. Here is everything you need to know about India’s Thomas Cup journey, from early semifinal runs to the 2026 edition.

What is the Thomas Cup?

The Thomas Cup is the world men’s team championship of badminton, organized by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Named after Sir George Alan Thomas, a legendary English badminton player, the tournament began in 1948-49.

Initially held every three years, the competition shifted to a biennial format in 1982. The tournament runs alongside the Uber Cup (women’s team championship) since 1984, making it one of badminton’s biggest spectacles.

Each tie consists of five matches: three singles and two doubles. The team that wins three matches first takes the tie. Only six countries have ever won the Thomas Cup: Indonesia (14 titles), China (11), Malaysia (5), Japan (1), Denmark (1), and India (1).

On May 15, 2022, Indian badminton witnessed its greatest team achievement. At the Impact Arena in Bangkok, India dismantled defending champions Indonesia 3-0 in their maiden final appearance.

The Final: India vs Indonesia (3-0)

Match 1 – Singles 1: Lakshya Sen beat Anthony Ginting (8-21, 21-17, 21-16)

The 20-year-old Lakshya Sen faced Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Anthony Ginting. After a disastrous first game where Ginting won 12 straight points, Sen showed remarkable composure. He clawed back to win the next two games and gave India the perfect start.

Match 2 – Doubles 1: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty beat Mohammad Ahsan/Kevin Sukamuljo (18-21, 23-21, 21-19)

The world No. 8 duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty produced the match of the tournament. After losing the first game, they saved four match points in the second game to force a decider. The Indian pair held their nerve to win 21-19 in the third.

Match 3 – Singles 2: Kidambi Srikanth beat Jonatan Christie (21-15, 23-21)

Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth delivered the title-winning blow. Despite Christie having a game point in the second game, Srikanth stayed calm and sealed a 23-21 victory. The moment he won, India erupted in celebration.

The quarterfinal against Malaysia was particularly crucial. India’s H.S. Prannoy played the decider with a twisted ankle but still delivered a 21-13, 21-8 victory against Leong Jun Hao to clinch a 3-2 win. This assured India their first-ever Thomas Cup medal.

The semifinal against 2016 champions Denmark was equally tense. With the tie at 2-2, Prannoy again stepped up, beating Rasmus Gemke despite injury troubles to send India into the final.

India’s Early Thomas Cup History: The Semifinal Era

Long before 2022, India had shown glimpses of potential at the Thomas Cup. Three semifinal appearances in the tournament’s early decades laid the foundation for future success.

1952 Semifinal

In the tournament’s second edition, India reached the semifinal but lost to Malaya (now Malaysia). Back then, Malaya was the dominant force in world badminton, eventually winning the title by defeating the USA 7-2. India’s performance showed that the country had the talent to compete at the highest level.

1955 Semifinal

India returned to the semifinals three years later. Once again, Malaya proved too strong, marching to their third consecutive title and beating Denmark 8-1 in the final. India’s consistent semifinal appearances in the 1950s demonstrated solid foundations in the sport.

1979 Semifinal

After a 24-year gap, India returned to the final four in 1979. This time, Indonesia stood in the way. The Indonesians were in their golden era, winning the title with a 9-0 demolition of Denmark in the final.

Notably, these early semifinals came in an era when losing semifinalists did not receive bronze medals. The modern format of awarding medals to semifinal losers began only in 1984. So, while India reached the last four three times, they officially never won a medal until 2022.

India at Thomas Cup 2024: Defending Champions Exit in Quarterfinals

India entered the Thomas Cup 2024 in Chengdu, China, as defending champions. However, the title defense ended earlier than expected with a quarterfinal loss to hosts China.

Group Stage Performance

India was placed in Group C alongside Thailand, England, and Indonesia. They started well, beating Thailand 4-1 and crushing England 5-0 to secure a quarterfinal spot.

The final group match against 14-time champions Indonesia ended in a 4-1 loss. H.S. Prannoy was the lone winner, defeating Anthony Ginting 13-21, 21-12, 21-12. India finished second in the group.

Quarterfinal: India vs China (1-3)

The quarterfinal against the hosts, China, proved to be India’s last match of the tournament. H.S. Prannoy lost the opening singles to World No. 2 Shi Yu Qi 15-21, 21-11, 21-14 after taking the first game.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost a thriller to World No. 1 pair Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang 21-15, 11-21, 21-12. Lakshya Sen kept India alive with a stunning comeback win against Li Shi Feng 13-21, 21-8, 21-14.

However, the second doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Sai Pratheek lost 21-10, 21-10 to He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Ju, ending India’s title defense. China went on to win the tournament, defeating Indonesia in the final.

Key Players Who Shaped India’s Thomas Cup Journey

Here are some Key Players Who Shaped India’s Thomas Cup Journey

Kidambi Srikanth

The former World No. 1 has been the backbone of Indian badminton for nearly a decade. His title-clinching win against Jonatan Christie in the 2022 final will forever be etched in Indian sports history. Srikanth went unbeaten throughout the 2022 Thomas Cup campaign, winning all six of his matches.

Lakshya Sen

The young shuttler from Almora has emerged as India’s brightest prospect. A 2021 World Championship bronze medallist and Paris 2024 Olympics semifinalist, Lakshya Sen showed incredible maturity in the 2022 final against Ginting. His recent All England 2026 runner-up finish proves he remains in peak form.

H.S. Prannoy

If anyone deserved a movie made on their Thomas Cup 2022 performance, it is H.S. Prannoy. Playing through an ankle injury, he won crucial decider matches against Malaysia (quarterfinal) and Denmark (semifinal). Without his heroics, India would not have reached the final.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty

Satwik-Chirag transformed Indian doubles badminton. What was once considered India’s weakness became a strength because of this pair. Their match-point saves in the 2022 final against Ahsan/Sukamuljo showcased their fighting spirit.

Currently ranked World No. 3, they are among the best doubles pairs globally. Their consistency gives India a huge advantage in team events.

Pullela Gopichand (Coach)

No discussion of India’s Thomas Cup success is complete without mentioning Pullela Gopichand. The last Indian to win the All England Championships (2001), Gopichand, built the foundation of modern Indian badminton. His academy in Hyderabad has produced multiple Olympic medallists and world champions.
